Aktis Suites & SPA – Patmos

Dazed by the heat, with heavy legs due to the exhausting lifestyle of the winter, you get up from the white sun bed and stand up. You walk two steps into the thick sand and your feet are eager to enter the blue sea. Overlooking Tragonisi, you take a long dive in order to cool off. Once you come back to the surface, life has a more optimistic flavor. Fishes bite your feet and seagulls land near you, while the sun paints the water surface with golden stripes. Released from all stressful thoughts, since saltiness burned all the anxiety, you feel blessed to be worthy of such a dive. Greek summer at its best. That is exactly what happens in the hotel «Patmos Aktis», you create experiences that will inspire you for a lifetime.

And it’s not only the long dives in optimism that will remain memorable during your stay in the revived Xenia. Your long afternoon strolls in the outdoor area of the hotel create the impression of walking in Chora. White-washed stone walls, picturesque alleys decorated with all kinds of flowers leading you from one neighbor to another and well preserved gardens compose this contemporary white province of 56 rooms and villas. The mystic ambiance forms a feeling that you are lost somewhere in the Eastern Mediterranean, with the sun following every step of your personal exploration.

Here, luxury comes hand in hand with complete relaxation. The construction materials won’t dominate you, you are free to wander, enjoy the salty air and solely discover all these elements that invisibly combine the hotel with the island’s historical and cultural identity. The riddle of this unconscious, yet existing, discovery already starts from the lobby area, where you notice a red inked signature on the wall, behind the reception desk. It represents the contract with which, in April 1088, Alexios A’ Komninos handed over Patmos to Saint Christodoulos in order to build the Monastery of Saint John the Evangelist.

Finesse beneath your feet

In the interior, you find different kinds of beachwear, essential for your summer walks by the sea. «Christian Zen» cotton towels, in creamy, summery shades, comfortable «coco mat» slippers, «Amazonas» sandals and elegant «Christian Zen» caftans in various designs and colors, add style to whichever summer look you choose. You may also find Greek swimwear «Despi», bikini or one piece, placed on wooden shelves or into round baskets, lying on the floor. What will certainly not go unnoticed are the various handmade jewelry mounted onto wooden furniture – antiques. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, badges in various lengths and designs, with colorful gems, all elegant and handmade by «Vanessa Geroulanou». This so neatly decorated place is full of artistic elements, reminding you of a famous designer’s boutique. Like a little jewelry exhibition, with gold being the basic element, and a huge mirror in order to try all these stylish jewelry. You feel as if being into a vintage showroom, where finesse and elegance prevail. Wooden shelves and benches filled with hats, scarves, swimwear, sarongs, jewelry, towels, slippers, bags, all in summery colors, as if one made them stand that way on purpose, so harmoniously next to each other, making you eager to try everything, adding color to your holidays and wardrobe.

Of course, a dominant element of the area is the Greek character, elaborately spread in the area due to half pieces of ancient amphorae, scattered onto the wooden shelves between Panama hats, swimsuit or jewelry. And in order not to leave anyone unhappy, there are also men’s swimwear and slippers on site. You may even buy sunscreen or selected cigars. Summer images are flooding your mind; you’re only just a breath away from your dreamy vacations. Naturally, sandals could not be missed, as they will comfortably lead you to the heavenly bay of Grikos in order to enjoy moments of relaxation and tranquility.

Greek delicacies by the sea

Square tables with checkered tablecloths are arranged onto the sand, right by the sea. They come along with purple, white, pink and red straw chairs, while reed roof umbrellas with white poles, resembling whitewashed tree trunks, protect them from the sun. Old fashioned feta cheese metallic cans are spread all over the area, serving as parsley and basil pots. Geraniums, olive trees and chrysanthemums are planted in various corners, giving you the impression of dining in a homey courtyard. There is a balcony with a few tables at the center, with a nostalgic, brownish, mosaic floor and colorful flowers at the entrance window sills, from which delicious aromas escape.

The whole setting reminds you of an old Greek movie. Right in front of you, in the small concrete jetty, local fishermen, wearing their traditional caps and light colored shirts, tie their boats and unravel their nets for the next catch. Spiros, Grikos’ seagull-mascot, either dives in order to cool off or approaches people in order to pinch a delicacy or two. The loudspeakers softly broadcast authentic Greek music, from Poly Panou and Stratos Dionysiou up to Eleftheria Arvanitaki and Haris Alexiou, while waiters guide you to a showcase where you choose fresh fish for yourself. There is an outdated blackboard presenting «today’s special», written with chalk. That moment, when you drink the first sip of iced ouzo, unwittingly flushing your lips from the saltiness of the sea, you realize that there is nothing truer than summer in Greece.

As soon as you give your order, goodies made of Greek, local products start landing on your table. Authentic flavors, based on the purity of raw materials: red, fleshy tomatoes, musky olive oil mixed with capers, fresh vegetables from local gardens, that only need a couple of walks into your frying pan to fascinate your palate, seafood appetizers to accompany your glass of raki or ouzo, such as squid, octopus and salted mackerel, are only some of the specialties on the list. In «Plefsis», this authentic tavern that provides apart from exquisite dishes, magnificent views of Tragonisi and «Kalikatsou», you are able to revive that carefree summer of your childhood.
